isla de los muertos ( Alemán : die toteninsel ) es el best-known pintura del artista simbolista suizo arnold böcklin ( 1827–1901 ) . las impresiones fueron muy populares en europa central a principios de 20th siglo vladimir nabokov observó en su novela desesperación que podrían ser " encontrado en cada hogar de berlín " . Böcklin produjo varias versiones diferentes de la misteriosa pintura entre 1880 y 1886 . La quinta versión fue encargada en 1886 por el museo de bellas artes , Leipzig , donde todavía cuelga .
